PhD student Hua Cai and Prof. Ming Xu have modeled the travel patterns over 10,000 taxis in Beijing. Using this model, they are able to estimate the potential greenhouse gas benefits from switching the Beijing taxi fleet to plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs). CSS Researcher, Clare Boland, is studying the life cycle impacts of using natural fibers such as cellulose, hemp, and kenaf along with plastic resins to produce automotive parts. Using data gathered from her summer internship experience at Ford, Clare is developing a tool to evaluate the energy and greenhouse gas savings from using these bio-based materials.
