Chinese Core Life Cycle Database (CLCD) & LCA Software from Desktop to Online

Abstract:  Sichuan University and IKE Environmental Technology have been working on LCA database and software development in China since 2006. They developed the first Chinese LCA database (Chinese Core Life Cycle Database, CLCD) and the first commercial LCA software eBalance. Up to now, CLCD has more than 600 datasets of the most widely used products, such as energy, transportation, metal and nonmetal materials, as well as various organic and inorganic chemicals. More than 1500 users in China and abroad are using eBalance and CLCD doing their LCA research. In addition, IKE just released their online LCA software - eFootprint on Sept.1, 2015 at the LCM 2015 conference in Bordeaux. eFootprint mainly has two versions: eFootprint for research enables the LCA practitioner to do ISO-compliant LCA case studies and consulting projects; eFootprint for business enables the enterprises to manage their environmental information along the supply chain, not only LCA, but also can be used to manage restricted substances and conflicts minerals, etc. Pilot case with Lenovo investigated more than 40 suppliers’ data through eFootprint and compiled a certificated product carbon footprint report for Yoga 3 notebook.

Bio:  Ping Hou is a first-year Ph.D. student in SNRE. She had been working at IKE Environmental Technology Co., Ltd. in China since she graduated from Sichuan University in 2012. At IKE and Sichuan University, she contributed to the development of Chinese Core Life cycle Database, China’s first desktop LCA software eBalance, as well as an online LCA software eFootprint. During her Ph.D. study in SNRE, she will focus on using existing life cycle inventory datasets to predict the unknown datasets through computational modeling.

Impact of water scarcity risks on the global trade network

Abstract:
Water scarcity is one of the most likely risks facing the world. Analyzing impacts of local water scarcity risk on the global trade network can support policy decisions on strengthening the reliability of the global trade network. Existing studies have revealed impacts of global production and consumption activities on local water scarcity. However, impacts of local water scarcity risk on the global trade network have not been uncovered. Here we identify critical nations and sectors in the global trade network, in terms of local water scarcity risks, using water stress index, global multi-regional input-output model, and network analysis tools. Results show that over one third of economic losses caused by local water scarcity risks in Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg happened abroad, while over half of economic losses in Estonia, Hungary, Netherlands, Lithuania, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Belgium are caused by water scarcity risks happened abroad. Local water scarcity risks of the United States has the largest impact on economic production of foreign nations in 2009, mainly on China, Japan, Mexico, Canada, and South Korea which trade intensively with the United States. China is largely impacted by foreign water scarcity risks in the United States, Japan, Germany, South Korea, Australia, and India in 2009. Network analysis reveals critical transmission sectors transmitting water scarcity risks between happening and influenced nation-sectors. Results show that key transmitting sectors largely differ from key sectors where water scarcity risks happen or where economic losses are influenced. We anticipate our findings to help strengthen the reliability of the global trade network through guiding water-related investments of international institutions, foreign aids by governments of nations, foreign investments of firms, and the choices of upstream suppliers by dominant firms in critical sectors.

Bio: Sai Liang is a postdoctoral research fellow at SNRE of the University of Michigan. He was selected as a Dow Sustainability Postdoctoral Fellow during September, 2013 – August, 2015. He is interested in understanding the complex interdependence of economic and environmental systems and the implications on policymaking. His research focuses on how the economies of the global trade network are likely to be impacted by future environmental challenges, specifically focusing on a country’s availability of freshwater. An interdisciplinary approach is required for the research by integrating methods and tools in environmental systems analysis, risk analysis, statistical physics, and macroeconomics. Sai got his Ph.D. degree and B.S. degree both in environmental science & engineering from Tsinghua University in Beijing of China.

Bio: Shen Qu is a Dow Sustainability Postdoctoral Fellow at SNRE of the University of Michigan. His current research focuses on how environmental risks may impact the global trade network. In particular, he combines tools of input-output analysis and network analysis to uncover the role of international trade in spreading and preventing environmental impacts. Shen got his Ph.D. degree in economics (with a focus on international trade) from Georgetown University at Washington D.C. and B.S. degree in mathematics and physics from Tsinghua University in Beijing of China.

Bio: Zeqi Zhu is a second year MS/MAE candidate at the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment and Department of Economics. As a Dow Sustainability Fellow and a research assistant at CSS, his research interests lie at the nexus of renewable energy, water and international trade. He has completed research internships with Rock Mountain Institute, Natural Resources Defense Council and Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology. Zeqi received a BS in environmental engineering and a BA in economics from Tsinghua University in China.
